Genesis GCD18BK 18v Cordless Drill Review

The Review

The Genesis GCD18BK is one of the top-selling drills on Amazon, despite that fact that no one has ever heard of the brand!  In fact, as I write this review, the drill has been either #1 or #2 on Amazon for drills for the past 2 years.  Now that’s a good record!

It is incredibly amazing that a unknown brand would be able to do this in the power tool market, but new tool brand Genesis has proved it can be done. With over 100, 5 star reviews, you know that this inexpensive power tool has something special going on.

The Genesis is a new competitor in the power tool market, and a great one at that.

Please note: Although I am reviewing this bestselling drill, I have no experience using it. Instead, I summarize all of the helpful reviews of this drill from the web, in a level-headed, unbiased manner. My goal is to do the hard research work for you, so you don’t have to. Pros:Genesis Drill

  • You can work for hours with the long battery life
  • Surprisingly durable for the price – it won’t fall apart on you!
  • Is able to drill holes and sink screws with ease
  • On board magnetic screw holder, worklight and bit holder are helpful
  • A really, really good value for the low price

Cons:

  • Low speed – You may have trouble with thick and hard materials.
  • Feels cheaper than “big name” expensive drills
  • Only comes with one battery, so when it’s dead, you’re done!

Reviews are really positive about this drill, and for the most part people love it.  Some professional users, however, are overly negative when this $30 drill doesn’t meet their needs.  But it’s only $30, so it greatly exceeds expectations for the price.

But, for the most part, people love this drill, and  it’s got some great selling points to back up it’s really low price.

In my personal experience with cheap drills, I can tell you that this drill seems way higher quality than drills from Harbor Freight and other discount tool stores.  Many users say that this drill trumps the quality of $50-$60 Black & Decker drills.  For these reasons, it gets a solid 4.5 stars!

Ease Of Use and Feel:

The Genesis 18v cordless drill has all of the features you’d expect in a product of twice it’s price, such as a 3/8″ keyless chuck, 18v power and a belt clip.  Reviewers state that it fits really good in your hand, and is well balanced too.  It’s weight is in a very normal range for drills of this power, and no reviewers made any comments about the battery being too heavy or any other feeling-related issues.  A few reviewers stated that it was lighter than expected, but that sure isn’t a bad thing!

Some reviews did state that the drill doesn’t seem to have a lot of power behind it.  This is due to the motor that only speeds up to 550RPM, and we really just have to remember that this is a $30 drill.  This means you can’t go racing through sinking bunches of screws really quickly, but it doesn’t mean that you’ll not be able to get the screw in or the hole drilled.

Also, due to the price, this drill only comes with one battery.  However, extra batteries are available and reasonably priced, and I’d suggest one if you’re going to be using this drill a lot.

It’s not a $100 drill, nor is it a equal replacement for one!  If we keep that in mind, it has a reasonable amount of power, and is a excellent value for the cost.

Special Features:

With this drill, the love is in the little details, and this product makes up for it’s lack of high power with an integrated magnet, LED guide light, level, bit case and a hard storage case.  Users mention that the LED guide light is especially useful and helpful when drilling in dark areas, or times when you block your light source with the tool, such as in a corner.

The special features are what really sets this drill up above the competition, and gives it that extra leg up in utility.  Reviewers love all of them, and state that they are very helpful in all sorts of situations.

Target User:

This drill is best for homeowners and hobbyists.  It is not a professional model, but home users state that it is an incredible drill for the cost, and meets their needs 100%.

This isn’t the drill to go build an addition on to your home with, but it is great for around the home fixes, hanging pictures, building furniture and occasional renovation use.  Remember, it’s $30, so you can’t expect it to drill through the whole earth!
